Amazon S3 real world cost savings

37Signals spent $2,004.12 on S3 last month. That’s for 8.8TB of data stored, 1.5TB uploaded, 2.9TB downloaded, and 12M requests. DHH pipes up on the comments about how that compares to competitor quotes:

It’s nothing in comparison to what it would cost us to do this ourselves. I think the last quote we got on a setup that could handle this like we wanted to was $10-15K. And then you have more management overhead too.
