The ultimately remarkable thing about in-game camera work is that it’s an entirely new style of cinematography. It borrows the scene-framing techniques of Hollywood, the action-tracking skills of sports broadcasting and the you-are-there feel of pointing your own camcorder around a tourist site. Yet it is fundamentally different from each of these. If game designers are still struggling with getting their cameras right, it’s because they’re inventing a new visual language.
