International Web 2.0 clones
Techcrunch has a fascinating article on Verwandt.de, the German clone of Geni (the U.S. based family genealogy social network). Verwandt is growing at nearly twice the rate that Geni is (Verwandt saw 9.5 million profiles created in the first five months, 4.5 million more profiles than Geni). German copycats are nothing new as you can read here and here. There are at least two lessons to learn from this article: genealogy on the web is insanely viral (and it’s all about the interface!), and going international can no longer be a last priority, not if you want to dominate as much as possible. Note to self: launch next project in the U.S., Germany, and China simultaneously.
