False confessions of an economic hitman?

I just watched a fantastic video interview featuring John Perkins, author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman. His basic claim is that the U.S. has used the world economy in the last 40 years to grow a worldwide empire at the expense of the rest of the world. Furthermore, the massive amount of money we’ve made in the process has been lining the pockets of the 1% of Americans that control 90% of our country’s resources. From bribes to economic enslavement to assassinations, apparently nothing has been beneath us. If what John says is true, and unfortunately I sense truth in his words, I can understand why many countries around the world hate us.
