Marketing should be subtle and indirect
Yes, there are times when in-your-face marketing messages really work. Take for example VW’s recent “Safe Happens” crash ads; they’ve reportedly “increased online dealer quote requests by 58 percent.” Don’t be tempted to rely on this type of marketing though. There’s another kind that’s cheaper, more authentic, and never gets old. It’s the subtle and indirect form of marketing, and it’s immensely powerful. Seth Godin points out how effective a personal follow-up can be. You don’t have to ask for a referral if you are taking care of your current customers in this personal way- they will spontaneously refer people to you. Also, Hugh of GapingVoid outlines an indirect marketing plan that promises global effects on a miniscule budget, with the only requirement being a consistent, authentic voice. I just find it inspiring that the cheapest marketing is the best marketing.
