Awesomemillion, a crazy idea that just might work
I found awesomemillion.com today via Adrants. Awesome million is like the milliondollarhomepage and even oneredpaperclip in that it is a totally original and highly unusual way to create real value out of nothing by telling a unique story and having it go viral. Awesomemillion also has one thing the other sites don’t- it’s hilarious. They are selling one million unique sub-domains at “isreallyawesome.com” for $1 each (or you can pay more for some extra features). So for instance, you could buy yourname.isreallyawesome.com for $1. You even get to choose from a handful of “really awesome” designs that look like some sort of bizarro-world plaque proclaiming your awesomeness, and they guarantee your page will be hosted for at least a year. Here are the other secrets to their success:
First of all, each page only costs $1 (at most $5 if you opt for the awesome extra features), so the masses can easily participate. Secondly, it’s at least mildly hilarious so you feel like you’re getting a good value for your buck. Lastly, you can buy them for your friends and family and give them as a gift. By comparison, the milliondollarhomepage and oneredpaperclip missed all of these elements. Awesomemillion.com is inexpensive fun and that’s why it will work, and probably in about a fifth the time it took for Alex to sell all the pixels on his million dollar homepage. In fact, I just purchased several awesome pages to give away.
I think Mark Li said it best:
How could anyone dislike a website that supports both ninjas and awesomeness? I paid $5, and I now have proof of what I always knew: that I am awesome. Keep up the good work.
